Genetically Modified Soybean

While only Roundup Ready™-soybean (MON-Ø4Ø32-6) was planted in the past years the commercialisation status of genetically modified soybean will change in the near future. Several new GM-soybean varieties with different traits will enter the market.

To date the following GMO soybean events are important or will play an important role in the near future:

  • Roundup Ready™-Soybean

Roundup Ready™-Soybean was one of the first GM-crops ever grown, in 2007 the commercial planting reached 57% of the global planting area. Roundup Ready-Soybean is approved in more than 25 countries, including all countries of the European Community. Qualitative as well as quantitative methods are available within our portfolio.

  • LibertyLink™-Soybean

Several lines of this herbicide tolerant GM-soybean were approved more than 10 years ago in the USA but only line A2704-12 was approved for food and feed in the EU. Eurofins GeneScan offers qualitative and quantitative event-specific methods for LibertyLink™-Soybean event A2704-12.

  • Roundup RReady2Yield™-Soybean

The second generation of Roundup-tolerant soybean (line MON89788) is expected to be planted commercially in the United States in 2009. Roundup RReady2Yield™-Soybean is approved in several countries including the EU, Canada, Japan, Australia and China. Roundup RReady2Yield™-Soybean lacks the common screening elements, which is why other qualitative screening as well as identification methods are available at Eurofins GeneScan.

  • Optimum GAT™-Soybean

Optimum GAT™-Soybean (event 356043, DP-356Ø43-5) provides tolerance to two different herbicides, its approval process in ongoing in the EU. Optimum GAT™-Soybean is not detectable with known screening methods, other detection systems are offered by Eurofins GeneScan.

  • TREUS™-Soybean

In addition to its herbicide tolerance TREUS™-Soybean (event 305423, DP-3Ø5423-1) contains a higher content of oleic acid. Similar to Roundup RReady2Yield™, Optimum GAT™ - soybean and this GM-soybean are not detectable with common screening methods. More specific detection systems are available at Eurofins GeneScan.
